After receiving numerous suggestions from returnees all over the Philippines, AFS Intercultural Programs Philippines has finally selected the name AFS Iskolarng mundo, given by AFS Returnee Ike SeƱeres of Batch 14 (1969-1970). Here’s Ike’s story:
I suggested that we call our newsletter “AFS Scholar,” believing that it was most descriptive of what we are and who we are. The term “AFS Returnee” causes a lot of confusion as to who and what we really are. In fact, we never really left AFS, so the term “returnee” is misleading.
Branding wise, “Iskolar” describes us best. As for positioning, the “scholar-image” projects AFS programs as highly desirable and of high value. After all, we actually offer scholarship programs. To state the obvious, we are truly ”scholars” in the truest sense of the word.
Ike spent spent his AFS year in Kankakee, Illinois. Presently the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Consultant for the City Government of Makati and the Chairman of the Makati City ICT Council, Ike writes a column for the Philippine Chronicle titled “BizzBuzz” and frequently hosts television and radio programs.
